Music and Dance of A Secret Society, MSFS Volume One.
A unique representation of the polyrhythmic structures
and concepts of traditional African Music. Yeve music and dance of the
Ewe people is considered a suite of seven to nine dance forms or movements.
The recordings on this CD feature a performance at the Mama Ahoewornu Yeve
Shrine of Dzodze Adagbledu in the Volta Region of Ghana. Produced by Dr.
Paschal Yao Younge as part of our Azaguno Music of the Secret and Forgotten
Societies of African Series (MSFS Vol. One).

Adzogbo
Ritual Music of the Southeastern Ewe of
Ghana: Aflao Mawulikplimi Adzogbo Ensemble.
Adzogbo originated from Benin as a dzohu (spiritual/religious) music and dance).
It was then called adzohu in that during any performance, the men dancers would
display their dzoka (magical expertise). When this music was brought to Togo
and later Ghana in the late 19th century, its function changed. It is now performed
by the southeastern Ewe of Ghana for entertainment.

Babasiko
Recreational Music of the Southeastern
Anlo Ewe of Ghana. Anlo Afiadenyigba Babasiko Ensemble.
Babasiko is a recreational music and dance of the Southeastern Anlo Ewe of Ghana,
performed mostly at social gatherings; festivals and funerals. Babasiko is flirtatious
in character. Its characteristic form is the strutting and bobbing up and down
and a display of theatrical elegance. The dancers portray courtship through movements
of the arms, eyes and total facial expression. Proposals of intimacy can be seen
accepted or rejected through bodily gestures. Produced by Paschal Yao Younge.

Gadzo
War Dance Drama Music of the Southeastern
Anlo Ewe of Ghana. Anlo Afiadenyigba Gadzo Ensemble.
Gazo is a war-dance drama of the Southeastern Anlo Ewe of Ghana, which came
from Notsie in the Republic of Togo. Originally, this music and dance was performed
after wars so that the warriors could re-enact battle scenes for those at home.
Presently, Gazo is performed during ancestral stool festivals, Zikpuiza, state
festival Hogbetsotso, funerals of important chiefs and members of the stool
hierarchy, and by professional and amateur groups for entertainment. Produced

Akpoka
Funeral Music of the Southeastern Ewe of
Ghana: Dzodze Apetepe Akpoka Ensemble.
Akpoka is among the oldest musical types performed by the Southern Ewe of Ghana.
Akpoka is derived from an older war dance known as Atrikpui. As a social and
recreational music and dance, its performance is open to everybody in the community,
irrespective of class, age, sex, and religion. Produced by Paschal Yao Younge.

Atrikpui
War Dance Drama Music of the Southeastern
Ewe of Ghana Dzodze Apetepe Atrikpui Ensemble.
Atrikpui, one of the oldest traditional music and dance of the Anlo- Ewe of Ghana
was originally a war music and dance ceremony performed before and after battles
to prepare for impending battle and also to celebrate victory or defeat. This
music was transformed and renamed Agbomasikui and later Agbadza. The original
form is still performed on special occasions such as the funeral of a chief or

Atibladekame
Women’s’ Funeral Music of the
Southeastern Ewe of Ghana: Dzodze Atibladekame Women’s
Ensemble.
Atibladekame is group name for six distinct but similar women dance groups in
Dzodze: Apetepe, Dafornyami, Kpordoave, Fiagbedu-Afegame, Adidokpui and Agbikornu,
Choral laments and dirges form the main lyrics of the songs and also the rhythmic
patterns of the instruments performed by the above groups are similar, so it
was very easy for them to unite to form a broader ensemble. Lead singers from
each group will however lead during a performance. Produced by Paschal Yao Younge.
